Finish 2013 in Style by Choosing Farrow & Ball’s All White for Your Oak Kitchen

All white Solid Oak Kitchen Door

Oh the weather outside is frightful,
But the fire is so delightful,
And since we’ve no place to go,
Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow!

At this time of year, we can’t help but think in festive colours; our minds are swayed by green, red, and gold schemes; by the cool complement of crimson holly berries against their glossy green leaves; and let’s not forget snow…

Ah, yes. A white, pure, dazzling blanket of snow has to be one of the most seasonal sights possible (though sadly it is a rarity around December 25th, at least in the UK!)

But still, if you cannot revel in a snowy exterior, there’s no reason why a hint of ice-cool brightness cannot be brought into your oak kitchen. White is one of the most enduring and versatile colours around, and is perfect for this flexible space: whether you are cooking, preparing or entertaining, the clean lines of real wood kitchen cabinets hand finished in white are sure to bring pleasure.

There are many shades of white but one of our favourites – and this month’s pick – has to be Farrow & Ball’s All White. New York designer Brad Ford affectionately describes the shade as ‘like a good friend’, adding that it is ‘easy to be around, dependable […] it makes you and all the things around you look terrific. It stays consistent in any light, but in the afternoon, it can really make a room feel like it’s glowing.’

We can think of little that is more appealing than a glowingly light kitchen during these short days and long nights. Better still, if you fancy a change and white is the dominant colour, the smallest of tweaks can completely revamp the overall aesthetic of your kitchen. Simply change your accessories, splashback or even your door handles and you can enjoy a vastly different look that still retains All White’s crisp, subtle serenity. A magnificently understated colour with surprising depth.

How to clean your hardwood kitchen cabinets

Sparkling clean cabinet

Christmas is on the way and as such, we thought we’d give you a starting hand with cleaning your cabinets. By regularly doing this, customers can ensure that their solid wood kitchens are kept in their optimum condition. Please see below for some helpful guidelines:

Weekly

Dusting your hardwood kitchen cabinets weekly removes any dirt or dust that has built up in recent days. Use a dry, lint-free cloth to wipe over the surface – it’s as simple and quick as that.

Monthly

Completely clean your cabinet – exteriors and interiors, including shelves – once a month using lukewarm water and washing up liquid. Refrain from using any other solutions as they will only damage the timber.

  • Remove the contents of the cabinet and wipe these over.
  • Whilst these are drying, clean the shelves, interior and exterior of the carcass. Take extra care with particularly soiled areas.
  • Immediately after cleaning, rinse through with clean water and wipe dry to prevent moisture damage in the timber.

Please note: cabinet doors should be cleaned regularly too. Use glass cleaner and a dry cloth for glazed portions of frontals or washing up liquid and water for timber elements. Painted cabinets require extra attention – if you clean them with too much pressure, colour can be dulled or chipped, which should be avoided (though this can easily be remedied with a quick lick of paint).

Correct maintenance of your solid oak cabinets is such a simple process and will pay off in the long run as they provide you with years of faithful service. And don’t forget, if you’d like to send us a picture of your efforts (we love seeing sparkling clean cabinets!), we’d be delighted to hear from you – we’re always looking for new pictures of wood kitchens to add to our soon-to-be launched ‘Case Studies’ page.
