Custom Kitchens On A Budget: Save Money And Do It Yourself!
The kitchen is often considered the heart of the home, so it is without doubt that a new kitchen is a huge investment for any home. Custom kitchens may have once been an expensive option, but choosing from our ready-built components to construct your kitchen could save you money. Solid wood cabinets and kitchen worktops are an excellent option – their strength means they will look great for years to come. Thanks to the natural material construction, they can be changed, updated and repaired with relative ease when compared to the alternatives. This guide has been put together to demonstrate how you can create the kitchen of your dreams for a fraction of the cost of bespoke designs.
Kitchen Design
At solid wood kitchen cabinets we do not employ kitchen designers, allowing us to reduce the cost of our kitchens, the savings of which can then be passed on to our customers.
Measuring your kitchen is a fairly straight forward task as long as you plan and prepare properly, and double check your measurements once you have finished the job.
We have written guides on kitchen planning (part 2 can be found here) and the importance of your kitchen triangle, to help you accurately measure your kitchen and design a usable layout using our pre-made kitchen cabinets. Compared to fully custom kitchens, doing this step yourself can save you money and allows you to choose solutions based on your needs and requirements.
Cabinetry
If you’re looking to replace an old kitchen, we recommend you start by measure your existing cabinets to make it easier to order new cabinets if you aren’t changing the layout. We have a wide selection of base units and wall cabinets in a variety of configurations and drawer units in a variety of configurations and full height larder units. Our range also includes a selection of specialist cabinets, including appliance and sink housing units, and bridging units – we can supply everything for constructing custom kitchens.
To make it quick and easy to install your new kitchen, our range of cabinets are pre-assembled as standard using a cam and dowel system which results in a very sturdy end product. This also allows you to save money on carpentry services whilst keeping you safe in the knowledge that your cabinets are constructed to a high standard.
Wirework and Shelving
To maximise the space available in tricky corner cabinets and full height larder units, we have a selection of kitchen wirework that provide storage solutions for a variety of different cupboards and cabinets. Our wirework is easy to install yourself and requires no specialist tools, making it a fantastic, low cost addition to custom kitchens. All of our cabinets are supplied with a single shelf as standard, but additional shelves can be purchased from our cabinet installation accessories if required.
Worktops
Arguably the centrepiece of your kitchen design, worktops are often the item that requires the most consideration for custom kitchens. With a whole host of materials to choose from, selecting the right one for your home is no easy feat. We have a selection of solid wood kitchen worktops which are the perfect complement to our solid oak cabinets. Oak work surfaces are a popular choice, but we also have exotic timbers like Zebrano and wenge if you are looking to create more of a statement.
For a fully custom work surface, our sister site, Worktop Express provides a bespoke cutting service, and are able to cut surfaces to size, or create apertures to accommodate hobs, sinks and taps.
Bespoke Door Colours
We’ve already spoken about the wide range of cabinetry we offer, but these aren’t complete without choosing from our extensive selection of cabinet frontals. We offer traditional or shaker frontals, in a variety of finishes, along with 4 glazed options. Our Signature range features the most popular colours available, but our bespoke option features 14 shades from Farrow & Ball, as well as a lacquered finish for those who prefer the natural look of oak timber. Farrow & Ball colours are water-based paints, which are the perfect complement to the solid oak frontals.
For truly custom kitchens, our bespoke painting service allows you to select any of the colours from Farrow & Ball’s extensive range. Bespoke painted cabinet frontals ensure you can get the look you want, and our service takes all the hard work out by providing our painted frontals pre-fitted for you. All you need to do is decide which colour you want to go with – our kitchen design tool is useful for visualising which shades work well together.
Installation
Installing your own kitchen may seem like a daunting task, but as our cabinets are all pre-assembled, installation is a much easier task. Custom kitchens can be costly to fit, so if you feel able to do this part yourself you can make big savings. We have a range of cabinet installation accessories and worktop installation and aftercare kits to ensure you have everything you need to fit your own kitchen.
A new kitchen is a fantastic way to add value to your home, and by following this guide, luxurious kitchens can be a lot more affordable. Have you built your own kitchen using our cabinetry or worktops? We’d love to see it on Facebook or Instagram so make sure you tag us in your posts!
