“Can you explain the difference between oak and prime oak worktops for solid oak kitchens?” Question of the Week 06.12.15
“Can you explain the difference between oak and prime oak worktops for solid oak kitchens?”
Alexander from Dursley sent in our latest ‘Question of the Week’. He likes the appearance of solid wood worktops, but wants to know what it is that distinguishes our standard oak and Prime Oak worktops.
QUESTION:
“I am particularly interested in matching oak worktops with the cabinets in my new kitchen, but I would like to know what the difference is between your oak and Prime Oak worktops. Are they worth the extra money?”
ANSWER:
Hi Alexander,
We are delighted to hear that you are interested in our oak worktops – they truly are an ideal companion for solid oak kitchens. This best-selling worktop is very hard-wearing and has timeless beauty afforded by the distinctive grain pattern and warm colouring, which makes it suitable for a variety of kitchen themes.
The difference between oak and Prime Oak is relatively obvious when you see the two worktops side-by-side, but I am happy to explain what it is that distinguishes these two forms of oak.
Standard oak worktops are ideal for farmhouse kitchens where a natural-looking worktop is most at home. The wooden staves used in the construction vary in colour and have a variety of distinct natural features such as characterful knots; the prominent grain pattern also makes them ideally suited to a country-style kitchen.
In contrast, our Prime Oak worktops have staves that have been especially selected for their uniform grain pattern and even colouration. The reduced number of natural imperfections means that the difference between each stave is less obvious, which creates a flawless finish whilst still showing off oak timber’s natural warm qualities. Prime Oak worktops are ideally suited to both traditional and modern kitchen settings.
Whilst both forms of oak are equally desirable, it ultimately comes down to your own taste as to which type of oak worktop will suit your kitchen. If you like the ‘rustic’ qualities of natural timber, then we would suggest choosing our standard oak worktop. If you would prefer a sleek surface that still shows off plenty of the charming characteristics of oak timber, then our Prime Oak worktops may be a more suitable choice.
To see the difference for yourself, we would recommend ordering one of our solid wood worktop samples, which are priced at just £5 including fast courier delivery. Each sample measures 200 x 150 x 40mm and is sanded and pre-oiled on one side to accurately represent the finished product.
You can find out more about the different worktops in our collection in our information guide entitled ‘Choosing Worktops for Solid Oak Kitchens: Standard, Deluxe or Full Stave’.
I hope this explanation helps, but if you have any further queries, please do get in touch via telephone or email.
Kind Regards,
The Team @ Solid Wood Kitchen Cabinets
