Essential Pancake Tools For Pancake Day 2017
Pancake Day is fast approaching and hopefully your solid wood kitchen is already fully-stocked with eggs, milk and flour – but how do you make sure you’re prepped to make the best crepes possible? We have put together this list of essentials to ensure you have a flipping great Shrove Tuesday!
Whether you are a complete novice and you need some help getting the lumps out of your batter, or are well-seasoned and want to add a little panache to your pancakes, this kit is perfectly suited.
The first step to perfect pancakes is measuring your ingredients out. If you do not already own a set of kitchen scales, this mechanical option from John Lewis offers fantastic value for money and looks great in a classically-styled solid oak kitchen. Measuring ingredients properly ensures your batter isn’t too thick or too runny, which is why we have made this number 1 on our list of essential pancake tools!
Once your dry ingredients have been weighed out, you’ll need to ensure your wet ingredients have been measured just as precisely. Not just for Shrove Tuesday, Pyrex jugs are a kitchen staple in many homes because they are microwave and dishwasher safe as well as being oven proof. They’re also incredibly good value for money – we found the 1L version shown above on Amazon for just £4. Forgo the mixing bowl and mix the dry ingredients into the jug – less washing-up and the jug makes it easy to get the batter into the pan!
A whisk is the best way to get a light batter that’s perfect for creating pancakes as delicate as French crepes. The vibrant Twist whisk from Joseph Joseph is fantastically designed, with the option to use as a flat whisk or a balloon whisk. The fold-flat design ensures that the Twist is compact enough to store in any kitchen and also dismantles for an incredibly easy clean up.
For the time pressed, a Joie Pancaker could hold all the answers. This all-in-one item allows you to measure, mix then pour, creating minimal mess. Perfect for those with children, the Pancaker allows controlled pouring, which is also great for creating interesting designs with your food.
Having the right pan can have an impact on the outcome of your pancakes! A shallow, non-stick option, like this one from Lakeland, works best as you won’t need to use oil to prevent it from sticking. This one is lightweight with a rubber handle for easy gripping (and flipping!) and is dishwasher safe.
If you aren’t confident with your tossing skills – or you just want to ensure no pancakes go to waste – this Silicone Flexible Pancake Turner is the ultimate in assisted pancake flipping. The width ensures your pancake is fully supported for the duration of the flip, and thin, flexible edges ensure no damage is done whilst the spatula is put into position. Not just for pancakes, this OXO Turner is a great spatula to have, ensuring your food stays intact when turned over.
The only thing left is toppings – but we’ll leave those down to you. Do you have any special pancake tools for your favourite toppings? We’d love to hear about them in the comments below. Alternatively, you can share your tasty toppings with us on our Facebook or Instagram pages.
