“How can I give solid oak kitchens a modern feel?” Question Of The Week 13.03.16
“How can I give solid oak kitchens a modern feel?”
Our second ‘Question of the Week’ for March was emailed in by Nigel in Hastings. Nigel, like us, has seen the benefits and beauty of solid oak kitchens, and wants to give his existing kitchen an update.
QUESTION:
“I have a solid oak kitchen which is wonderful quality, but I’m in the process of giving my house a bit of a ‘face-lift’, and would like to update my kitchen to create a more modern feel. I’ve been looking at different components on your website – such as replacement worktops and handles – and was wondering what you could suggest for this project.”
ANSWER:
Hi Nigel, it’s great to hear from you – we’ve had the pleasure of helping many a home improvement project over the years, and I hope we can help you too!
There are many modern touches that can be added to your kitchen without having to make drastic changes. You can easily change elements such as worktops, handles, lighting and colour to bring your kitchen up to date.
Primarily, dark wood worktops make a break from tradition and instantly create an impression of modernity. Timber such as exotic wenge is ideal for this purpose; dark in colouring with a distinctive grain pattern, this worktop is also hard-wearing and looks particularly magnificent contrasted with pale walls. Alternatively – if a darker timber suits your style – you could also opt for black oak. This oak timber has been treated to darken the wood and looks highly luxurious. If dark wood is not in keeping with the rest of your home design, beautifully pale maple is a fantastic option, creating a clean and bright look that also helps to reflect light back into the room. Paler timber also looks stunning against deeper, more dramatic wall colours.
Additionally, updating the handles on your cabinetry would be a simple way to change the look of your kitchen. Wooden knobs are better suited to traditional kitchens, and could be replaced with a contemporary stainless steel mushroom knob. Alternatively, if your cabinets have handles, sleek steel bars make for a much more stylish aesthetic.
Let’s talk about lighting. A poorly-lit kitchen can seem gloomy and dated; fortunately, this effect can be improved easily by installing some bright and modern lighting. Modern kitchen designs frequently incorporate either one or a series of hanging pendant lights, which look fantastic and provide valuable illumination for food preparation and dining areas. Under cupboard lighting – which will flood your workbenches with light and eliminate shadows – is also a great idea. If you don’t fancy the trouble of wiring these in, simple battery-powered options are a solution that can be fixed to the underside of your wall units with minimal hassle. Shiny splashbacks in glass or stainless steel make stylish, contemporary kitchen additions, and serve the dual-function of protecting your walls and bouncing light back into the room.
