“How should I store worktops before fitting them in solid oak kitchens?” Question of the Week 24.01.16
“How should I store worktops before fitting them in solid oak kitchens?”
The latest ‘Question of the Week’ was sent in by Jamie in Cardiff. He is ordering worktops and other kitchen components from us, but is not installing them straight away, so wanted some advice on storage.
QUESTION:
“I am in the process of preparing my kitchen order, but will not be having it installed straight away, so I wanted to know how you recommend storing the worktops and cabinets in the meantime.”
ANSWER:
Hi Jamie,
Thank you for sending your query in – we are really pleased to hear that you are close to submitting your order for your new kitchen.
It is very important to consider how and where you will store the wooden components for solid oak kitchens, as incorrect storage may lead to warping or other movement that may damage the goods.
Our wooden kitchen cabinets are constructed from 18mm thick European solid oak panels for the sides, top and base, plus a 3.5mm rear panel covered in a real oak foil. Our wooden worktops are also constructed from a number of solid wood staves. The use of natural materials means that environmental variations can affect the timber prior to installation.
Please consider the following when storing either flat-packed cabinets or wooden worktops:
Always store the products in a dry area that maintains an average temperature. Any room that is either too hot or too cold, or has a fluctuating temperature, could cause the panels to split or warp.
We always recommend inspecting the packaging and all products where possible on delivery. After checking each product, we recommend stacking them in a neat formation, raised up off the ground to avoid any potential leaks or temperature variation that may radiate from the floor.
For worktops and larger cabinet panels, it is recommended that you separate them using multiple small battens so that air can circulate freely.
If you decide to order pre-assembled cabinets, we suggest the following:
Keep the pre-assembled cabinets in as much of their original packaging as possible to protect them prior to installation.
Store in a dry area with a stable average temperature. As with flat-packed cabinets, they should not be kept in a location that experiences large fluctuation in temperatures.
Do not store the cabinets on top of each another unless they are safely secured.

Kind Regards,
The Team @ Solid Wood Kitchen Cabinets
Please Note: As of May 2016, all cabinets are now pre-assembled for convenience and ease of installation.
