How to Install Pilasters and Corner Posts in Solid Wood Kitchens
There is a fantastic array of frontal accessories available to complete your kitchen; these delightful finishing touches combine together to create beautifully finished solid kitchen cabinets. Pilasters and corner posts are a stylish and decorative touch for kitchens and can be lacquered or painted to match your Solid wood kitchen cabinets, or oiled to complement wooden worktops. There are a variety of styles available, from square edge options to more ornate, decorative designs. Whichever style you choose, here are some helpful instructions for installing your new frontal accessories.
INSTALLING PILASTERS
- Position the pilaster in line with the cabinet carcass and clamp it into place, to ensure it does not move whilst drilling
- Drill small pilot holes in the upper, middle and lower sections of the cabinet panel, so that screws can be used without risk of splitting the timber. You may want to position the drill holes so that they will later be disguised by door hinges or drawer runners, for a pleasing overall look.
- Finally, screw into position.
Alternatively, you may wish to use L-brackets to attach decorative pilasters to your base cabinets. To do this, the steps above can be completed in the same way, adding brackets in before screwing the pilaster into place. It is important to ensure each bracket lies flush against the pilaster and the adjacent cabinet surface.
If you are mounting your pilaster to the flat edge of a cabinet divide, you can use carefully applied silicone adhesive to attach it.
INSTALLATION OF POSTS FOR CORNER CABINETS
Installing corner posts is very similar to installing pilasters, and relatively simple to complete. To install corner posts, you will need to use L-brackets to attach them to the side panel of the kitchen unit. Again, we recommend clamping the post in position before drilling your pilot holes and screwing into place. You should ensure that the post is carefully positioned so that it does not interfere with the opening and closing of cabinet doors.
If your corner units are configured in a way that does not permit this method of installation, an alternatvie solution would be to use silicone adhesive to secure the corner post.
Pilasters and corner posts come in a wide variety of finishes, and add elegance to any solid wood kitchen. If you would like to see fitted examples of them, we recommend visiting one of the Solid Wood Kitchen Cabinet showrooms.
