How to Plan a Kitchen: Small Solid Oak Kitchens
We’re not all lucky enough to have cavernous amounts of space for our dream solid oak kitchens, but even in the most diminutive of places, there are still plenty of options for making the most of available space.
At Solid Wood Kitchen Cabinets, we provide a huge range of cabinet sizes to help tailor your kitchen designs to virtually any requirements you might have. Our standard oak kitchen cabinets start at just 150mm wide, and go all the way up to 1200mm, with depths of either the standard 570mm, or a slimline 300 and 450mm variations. Each of our cabinets is supplied with one solid oak shelf, and additional shelves can be purchased in packs of two for any of our cabinet sizes, starting at just £20.
If you’ve got limited space, but your heart is set on a solid wood kitchen, then have a read of our handy design tips before you make a purchase:
Think Upwards
It comes as no surprise that the best way to maximise space efficiency in your kitchen is to use wall-mounted cabinets. Our wall mounted cabinets come in the same wide range of sizes and depths as our standard base cabinets, and can either be fitted with frontals or left open to create a more airy feel.
If you’re pushed for space in a galley-style kitchen, our bi-fold cabinet doors are an excellent idea.
Make Best Use of Natural Light
Retaining light in a small kitchen can be a real challenge, but there’s a few things you can do to keep as much natural light coming in as possible.
First, use bright colours in your kitchen to reflect light and make the kitchen feel larger. Colours from our Pastels range are perfect for cabinet doors, but also look great on kitchen walls.
If you’re installing plenty of wall cabinetry (as we suggest), then consider our glazed frontals. They not only look stylish, but are also excellent for giving depth to your kitchen and reflecting daylight.
Our glazed frontals are available in a variety of ‘Shaker’ and ‘Traditional’ styles to suit a whole host of kitchen designs.
Keep it Light & Simple
Keep a small kitchen light, bright and clutter-free and it will always feel bigger than if it’s filled with unnecessary extras. Keep windows clear and consider using blinds rather than curtains. Usually a simpler design will work better in kitchens of a limited size, rather than one which is lavished with intricate accessories.
Light coloured walls and cabinets stop smaller kitchens from feeling dark and gloomy by reflecting natural light. Add accents of character with splashes of brighter colours.
Built-In Appliances
Little does more to add that feeling of kitchen chaos than having a hotchpotch of appliances on display. We offer a variety of cabinets capable of fitting standard width appliances, as well as more specialist cabinets to cater for ovens. Under-counter appliances can be easily incorporated rather than being left free-standing.
Alternatively, use built-in appliances that are hidden behind a solid oak door fascia to entirely hide them from view. Electric hobs are also suggested for compact kitchens as they can double as extra worktop space when not in use.
Worthy Wirework
Don’t have a corner cabinet without considering our wirework. They’ll help you avoid having to get on your hands & knees to reach in to the depths of your cupboard and make every square inch of your cabinets more useful. We have a variety of wirework to suit corner cabinets, full height cabinets, and a variety of other pull-out baskets and spice racks. Most of our wirework is soft-close and manufactured within the UK.
Clever Cupboards
There are plenty of clever storage ideas from Solid Wood Kitchen Cabinets to keep your kitchen free of clutter. We offer high-quality slimline cabinets that have been specifically designed to hold wine bottles flat and we’ll soon be offering a wider range of cabinet accessories to cater for cutlery and kitchenware, so keep an eye on the site for more innovative storage solutions.
If you’ve got an unusual kitchen layout, then never fear – we can cater for all shapes, however small the room may be. Our experienced team are on hand to advise which cabinetry and worktops would be most suitable for your kitchen, so feel free to get in touch.
