“Can I Add Solid Wood Doors To MDF Cabinets?” Question of the Week 19.03.17
“Can I Add Solid Wood Doors to MDF Cabinets?”
This week, our customer question comes from Ms. Ling in Crewe, who wants to know if our solid oak cabinet doors work as well on cabinets constructed from other materials.
“I was reading your guide about adding value to your home and wanted to update my kitchen before moving. Can I use your wooden replacement cupboard doors on my MDF cabinets?”
Hello Ms. Ling,
Thank you for sending in your query. We’re so pleased to hear that you found our guide useful and want to try out some of the suggestions we made.
Whilst we would highly recommend purchasing new solid wood cabinets, if you want to reduce costs and replace the cabinet frontals without changing your MDF cabinets, this will also work. The back panels of our cabinets are actually manufactured from high-quality MDF; the reason for this is that MDF does not move, and thus it allows the oak from the rest of the cabinet to expand and contract as needed.
The addition of a tongue and groove end panel at the end of a run of cabinets could also enhance the look of an older kitchen without adding much to the cost. We have an installation guide for end panels that we recommend you consult – you could also save money by doing the work yourself, provided you are comfortable with doing so.
We hope we have answered your question to your satisfaction. If there is anything else you would like to know about refreshing your MDF cabinets (or replacing them!), please do not hesitate to get in touch.
