Emerald - Pantone Colour of the Year

Here at Solid Wood Kitchen Cabinets, we’re big fans of anything natural and organic – particularly in kitchen design. That’s why we specialise in solid wood and promote sustainability: when it comes to kitchen furniture, there’s simply no reason to turn away from the naturally-formed materials of planet Earth. This bounty can be more attractive and durable than any other substance if treated protectively and with sensitivity.

And it looks like the colour experts at Pantone agree: they’ve chosen an organic green – Emerald – as the colour for 2013, espousing its prominence in nature and inspiring vibrance. Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, commented: ‘Green is the most abundant hue in nature — the human eye sees more green than any other color in the spectrum.’ Pantone also draws attention to the regenerative richness of green; it’s ‘the color of growth, renewal and prosperity — no other color conveys regeneration more than green. For centuries, many countries have chosen green to represent healing and unity.’

Emerald can be both fantastically uplifting and soothing in a kitchen: we love it as an accessory, and now the Pantone results are out we are sure there will be plenty of tiles, crockery and gadgets in emerald hues flooding the market. But what about cabinets? Emerald is a bold colour, to be sure, but used in the right way – a statement island, perhaps – can be used to inject some earthy brightness into your cabinetry. Farrow & Ball’s Arsenic is the closest match to Pantone’s Emerald – though for softer, complementary greens, you could also try Cooking Apple Green, Saxon Green, or our favourite, Mizzle.
