2014 Kitchen Trends and Oak Kitchens for Sale

Kitchen Trends and Oak Kitchens

Now that the first month of 2014 is coming to a close, we’re thinking about two things: the rest of the year and our super January sale!

2014 is well underway and everyone – from interior designers to kitchen experts to customers – is talking about what is going to be the kitchen look for this year. As such, we’ve done a little bit of research ourselves and can share a few hot tips with you…

1. Open or Glass Fronted Wall Cabinets

A dramatic shift in terms of interiors trends: rather than traditional fronted cabinets, we will see far more open ‘shelf’ storage and glazed frontals. In general, kitchens are moving towards an open, airier look, with plenty of characterful yet organised accessories; exposed storage would be a perfect nod to this much-desired aesthetic. The good news is that solid wood kitchen cabinets without doors and glazed frontals can both be purchased for extremely affordable prices at Solidwoodkitchencabinets.co.uk!

2. Country-style, family-friendly kitchens

Always a popular look, this trend is being ‘updated’ for 2014 with the inclusion of reclaimed elements and vintage items, along with rustic woods and earthier materials like wicker and clay.

3. Storage, storage, storage

Economy of space is a vital consideration for most modern kitchens; whether you aspire to make the most of a small kitchen or simply desire a sleek look for a large space, innovative storage solutions are a must. Pull-out larders, overhead cabinets and cutlery trays are just a few of the options that are predicted to be most popular in 2014. Our cabinets are fully customisable and can be adapted to make the most of your space: please consult our wirework page for more information.

We hope that you have found these tips inspiring – and if you have, there’s no better time to put your new-found knowledge to look and start designing your kitchen, because we’re running a 10% sale on all oak kitchen cabinets and related accessories until the end of January. You’ve still got time to order and take advantage of the fabulous savings on offer, just enter the discount code ‘NY2014’ at checkout by Friday (31st) and enjoy!

Solid Wood Kitchens in Mizzle: A Fresh, Fashionable Look for 2014

colour of the month - MIZZLE

As ever, we begin 2014 with bated breath, wondering what colour experts Pantone have to predict. While their colour of the year, ‘Radiant Orchid’, (a vibrant fuchsia shade) might be a little bold for some kitchens, there are plenty of subtle shades in their 2014 palette that would look beautiful in your solid wood kitchen.

Hemlock, described by Pantone as a ‘summery ornamental green’, solidifies the trend that has been evident in many early 2014 interiors: green kitchens and natural looks are in. While Pantone recommend using this deep sage shade as an accent colour, paler, minty shades would provide the perfect base colour for a kitchen – particularly if you are incorporating solid oak cabinetry and can make the most of the ‘organic’ theme.

Enter one of our favourite Farrow & Ball shades – and staple of our own standard colour collection – Mizzle. This dreamy green takes its name from that light rain so reminiscent of the West Country; hints of blue and grey soften the colour, meaning that it is cool enough to be used as a ‘neutral’ within a scheme and punchy enough to add a touch of natural brightness.

Mizzle is the perfect complement to our solid oak kitchen doors. Simply select the hand painted option when ordering online and we will hand finish your doors to order. We welcome you to enjoy this fashionable, fresh shade this January!

How to clean solid oak kitchen doors

Kitchen Cabinet frontals finish

Replacement cabinet frontals are a valuable addition: both the crowning addition to a new solid wood kitchen and a perfect, cost-effective way to refurbish an old look, an easy, frequent schedule of cleaning will help to uphold their optimum condition.

Lacquered

Lacquered finishes are the most durable, requiring very little maintenance. Simply cleaning with a damp cloth should remove any debris or dust without causing damage to the surface.

A more vigorous clean will be needed to remove any greasy or stubborn stains that have built up, however. Using a solvent-based furniture cleaner or good quality wood polish, gently clean the timber, paying extra attention to the most soiled areas. Once completed, your solid oak kitchen doors will have been restored to their original, prime quality. We suggest doing this no more than once a month – cleaning too frequently can cause damage to your frontals.

Naturally sanded

Persistent marks that cannot be removed easily may require a weak solution of warm water and household detergent such as washing up liquid. Clean your cabinet doors with this, ensuring you work with the timber’s natural grain pattern. It’s important that you immediately rinse and dry naturally sanded frontals. The moisture balance is affected if water sits on the surface, which in turn can pose problems for the timber.

Painted

An accumulation of dirt can often be most notable on painted frontals, particularly with pale shades. Fortunately these frontals are very easy to clean. Washing up liquid will do the trick – using a cloth, gently clean the surface, again making sure you work with the timber’s grain pattern. Do not apply too much pressure as this can cause the paint to dull in places. Once the doors are clean, wash with water and dry straight away. If you do feel that the colour has faded a little, simply ‘touch up’ with a small amount of paint.

Glazed

To clean the lacquered or painted frame of your glazed frontals, please follow the relevant instructions above. Simply use glass cleaner with a cloth or kitchen roll for the glass panels.

Maintaining your kitchen frontals really is that simple. Regularly cleaning will preserve the outstanding quality for years to come, saving unnecessary time and money on replacement cabinets. If you need any advice or if you happen to have a great wood cleaning tip to share with us, please don’t hesitate to contact us – we’d be delighted to hear from you.
