SOLID WOOD KITCHEN CABINETS BLOG

Spotlight on Worktops to Complement Solid Oak Kitchen Cabinets

Posted by admin on July 29, 2015 at 11:58 am. Filed under: General

You may have already decided that solid oak kitchen cabinets are perfect for creating the structure of your new wooden kitchen, but there are other details that you will also need to consider.

At Solid Wood Kitchen Cabinets we not only offer a variety of components to finish your cabinets, but also a large range of wooden worktops to provide the perfect kitchen surface.

We believe solid wood is the ideal material to complement our oak cabinet carcasses and other accessories, as it is hard-wearing, versatile and totally unique – no two wood worktops are the same.

There are thirty different worktops in our range, featuring traditional timbers such as oak, beech and maple alongside other more exotic alternatives such as rich black American walnut, striking zebrano and dark, luxurious wenge. Whatever your timber preference, there is a worktop to suit your kitchen.

Our standard worktops are constructed from many staves up to 40mm wide, whilst we also offer a Deluxe alternative with staves up to 90mm wide, and for the most lavish kitchens, our full stave worktops feature a small number of 90mm staves that run the full length of the worktop.

If you would like to finish your kitchen in style with a solid wood worktop, but would like to see the quality of our hardwood up-close, then why not order one of our worktop samples, or pay a visit to one of our kitchen showrooms?

Our New Easy-Cargo Waste Bins are Ideal for Oak Kitchens

Posted by admin on July 22, 2015 at 8:59 am. Filed under: Products

If you are considering a kitchen composed of fine solid wood components, such as our oak kitchen cabinets, wooden kitchen drawers and wood kitchen doors, it seems a shame to then spoil the look and feel of oak kitchens with unsightly accessories such as a freestanding kitchen waste bin.

The latest addition to our range of accessories aims to solve this problem by tucking your kitchen bin away in a cupboard – out of sight, and out of mind.

Our Easy-Cargo kitchen waste bins are especially designed to sit comfortably in one of our 500mm wide base cabinets, with a slide-out mechanism allowing easy access, whilst the fixed lid ensures that the bin is always covered to reduce odour and minimise mess.

The bins are available in two styles: a 40L capacity single bin (priced at £125), or a dual 19 + 30L set (priced at £150) that enables easy sorting of waste into two compartments – one for general waste, the other for recycling or food waste. Each bin is made from high-grade food-safe plastic and can be easily removed for waste disposal and cleaning.

Mounting the bin into one of our cabinets is easy, as the sturdy metal frame can simply be secured onto the bottom panel of our cabinets with four screws – no specialist tools are required.

If you like the sound of our Easy-Cargo waste bins, then why not treat your kitchen and free up some floor space whilst you’re at it. You can find out more about our new range in our ‘Guide to Waste Bins for Solid Oak Kitchens’.

July’s Kitchen Gadget of the Month

Posted by admin on July 15, 2015 at 3:55 pm. Filed under: General

Each month we take a trip out into the gadget’sphere and bring back a piece of kitchen technology that we think would happily grace wooden worktops in any of our customer’s solid oak kitchens.

This month we have picked the Magimix Vision Toaster as our gadget of the month – a unique toaster that allows you to view your bread as it turns into toast, in order to ensure the perfect level of browning is achieved to suit your jam, curd or yeast-based spread of preference.

The Vision Toaster features extra-wide slots to cater for all breads and buns, variable browning timer control and a set of high-quality quartz elements that ensure fast and even toasting; the host of settings even allows you to toast a bun or bagel just on one side. Each setting has its own button making it incredibly easy to use, and additional features such as the extra high lift lever and full length crumb tray make it easy to keep clean.

Constructed from stainless steel and finished in a brushed aluminium shell with glass sides, this large capacity toaster is ideal for those of you with a modern kitchen who simply have to have the perfect piece of toast every morning.

The Magimix 11526 Vision 2-Slice Toaster (to give it its full name) is available directly from Magimix on Amazon for £159.95; and though this might seem like a reasonably hefty price tag for a toaster, if you are up every morning with a round of toast, then this is the ideal gadget for you!

If you already have this toaster, or another gadget you think deserves to be featured here on the blog, then don’t hesitate to leave us a message on one of our social media pages. We can be found on Facebook, Twitter, Google and also Pinterest.

Colours of the Month: Cool Hues for Solid Wood Kitchens

Posted by admin on July 8, 2015 at 8:53 am. Filed under: General

With the weather heating up outside, we thought we would take the temperature down a notch with this July’s ‘Colours of the Month’ by recommending a palette of cool hues from Farrow & Ball.

Plummett is a gorgeous dark slate grey that – whilst not as grey as Downpipe – is ideal for painting oak kitchen doors and drawer fronts in solid wood kitchens, and varies in tone from looking like a cool turquoise in warm daylight, to becoming gritty and industrial in cooler light. It works perfectly when coupled with a variety of timber worktop choices, looking particularly prominent alongside black American walnut worktops and other similarly luxurious dark wood species.

To complement the darker tones of Plummett, Sky Light is a fantastic alternative to reserved off-whites. More defined than Farrow & Ball’s Borrowed light – with tinctures of blue and pale grey depending on the available natural light – this subtle shade perfectly combines with the deeper colours in this palette to keep your kitchen feeling fresh.

Pitch Blue is an ideal mixture of rich blue that doesn’t feel overbearing, making it ideal to complement the other two hues in this month’s colour palette. Consider using it for a feature wall, or to decorate focal points in your kitchen such as the sides of a kitchen island, or cornices & pelmets around the top of wall-mounted cabinets.

If you think that this month’s colour palette would suit your new kitchen, then why not order a selection of our miniature painted cabinet door kitchen samples? You can then assess these colours within the natural light of your home. Each sample is a replica of a full-size oak cabinet frontal, and can be hand-finished in any Farrow & Ball colour of your choosing.

Spotlight on Knobs & Handles for Solid Oak Kitchen Cabinets

Here on the blog we have covered all the main components that make up our beautiful wooden kitchens, but it is often the smaller details that help a kitchen stand out.

On our website we offer a wide variety of handles and knobs to suit solid oak kitchen cabinets, ranging from simple yet elegant solid wood knobs available in a variety of timber choices, to more ornate sets such as the Edison, Lamont or Acanthus ranges.

Ultimately, choosing the best handle for your kitchen does depend on your own personal preferences, but some are more suited to modern kitchens, whilst others look right at home in traditional or farmhouse kitchens.

For modern Shaker kitchens, we recommend considering the following models:

Some of our knobs and handles are British made, which is denoted by a Union flag on the individual product pages, whilst the handmade logo means exactly that – they have been made with loving care (rather than being produced in mass quantities).

Our variety of solid wood knobs suit both contemporary and classic kitchen designs, although we recommend matching them with a similarly coloured worktop against a set of kitchen unit doors with a contrasting colour.

If you would like to see our full range of handles and knobs for yourself, visit one of our kitchen showrooms. Each showroom features a number of handles and knobs as part of their demonstration kitchens, whilst others are available to view separately.
