May’s warm and welcoming ‘Colours of the Month’ are perfect for a kitchen that doubles up as a cosy spot for entertaining guests. If throwing dinner parties is a common activity in your house, why not serve up one of these bright and inviting shades for a stove-side gathering where everyone feels right at home. Whether you are creating a feature wall or choosing painted frontals for solid oak kitchen cabinets, these high quality paints from Farrow & Ball are sure to brighten up your kitchen.

Sunny Babouche by Farrow & Ball is the ideal choice for kitchen deprived of natural light
Make a statement with vibrant Charlotte's Locks by Farrow & Ball, which takes inspiration from 1950s kitchens
Farrow & Ball's Cook's Blue paint is perfect for wooden cabinetry - and is also said to deter flies!

Farrow & Ball’s bright and sunny Babouche brings cheer to kitchen cabinetry by the bagful, making it particularly perfect for kitchens with limited natural light. Shades of yellow give added sophistication when teamed with elegant grey, so we suggest pairing this paint with Plummett to give this playful colour a grown-up twist.

If you are partial to blue tones, Cook’s Blue is a splendid choice, and is a richer, brighter alternative to powder blue. Cook’s Blue looks excellent on woodwork, such as solid oak kitchen doors, and sits beautifully alongside pale timber surfaces such as our maple worktops.

Our third ‘Colour of the Month’ is striking Charlotte’s Locks. This spicy shade is a fantastic feature colour for wood kitchens, and – inspired by the orange accents of 1950s kitchens – is a fashionable and eye-catching shade that makes a great talking point.

Design Inspiration: Open units for oak kitchens

Posted by admin on May 18, 2016 at 2:21 pm. Filed under: General

There are many ways to add personality to oak kitchens – but open kitchen cabinets have to be one of the best. In addition to making items such as crockery and recipe books easily accessible, open cabinetry also adds variation and depth to the look of a beautiful wooden kitchen. Whether you are looking for open base units, wine racks or display shelves, there are plenty of ways by which you might incorporate this style of solid wood cabinet into your kitchen design.

Open base units make a feature of cookware and crockery

OPEN CURVED CORNER CABINETS

Our curved base and wall corner units form part of our selection of specialist cabinets, and are made from solid oak. These provide the perfect finish to a run of cabinetry, and are ideal for storing fruit or decorative items, keeping them close to hand whilst ensuring that your worktops remain clear for food preparation.

OPEN SHELVING

Open shelf units provide a practical storage space for recipe books. When a cabinet is purchased, we supply one solid oak shelf as standard; however, these units can in fact accommodate up to five shelves (which can be purchased separately). Base units are available in three depths (300mm, 450mm or 570mm) and a range of widths (from 150mm to 1500mm); and wall units are available in options of 570mm, 720mm or 900mm high, with widths ranging from 150mm to 1200mm. All are finished in a smooth, hard-wearing lacquer, ensuring an attractive yet durable appearance.

OPEN FULL-HEIGHT UNITS

Our robust full-height cabinets are ideal for displaying items such as dry foods and cookware at eye-level, and provide a vast amount of larder storage space. They can also supply a useful spot to place a microwave or any other appliance that you do not wish to store on your work surface. We recommend installing open full-height units in utility rooms or pantries, as convenience is often more important than the overall aesthetic within these rooms; having lots of dry food items on display can sometimes look cluttered, so it is best to store them behind cabinet frontals in kitchens where you may be likely to entertain guests.

WINE RACKS

Our open wine rack units are perfect for making a feature out of your fine array of beverages. The lacquered oak units provide a beautiful contrast with painted cabinetry, and will draw attention to your impressive collection!

Open cabinet units are ideal for showcasing eye-catching accessories in oak kitchens, and also create a fantastic opportunity for the integration of attractive storage solutions, such as wicker baskets, glass canisters and mason jars. Jars can be decorated with ribbon, raffia or home-made labels for a pretty, personalised touch.

Cornices and pelmets for solid wood kitchens

Posted by admin on May 11, 2016 at 2:18 pm. Filed under: General

If you have recently planned a home makeover and are looking for a final flourish to top off oak cabinetry, oak cornices and pelmets might be the perfect finishing touch.

Cornices make an elegant addition that sit atop wall units, and are available in either a Shaker or Traditional finish to coordinate with your wooden frontals. Full of panache, these kitchen complements add height to cabinets and exude an air of elegance in classically-styled solid wood kitchens.

A cornice’s partner in crime, the pelmet is another magnificent addition to solid oak cabinets. Fixed to a cabinet’s underside, a pelmet is a small trim that gives a more ‘finished’ look to cabinets, imbuing any design with sophistication.

Cornices and pilasters are the perfect finishing touch for solid oak kitchens

All our cornices and pelmets come in lengths of 2700mm, and are produced from a combination of solid oak and oak-foiled MDF, which allows them to be installed with ease. For customers who would like to place an order for cabinetry with curved corners, we also supply curved cornices and pelmets to perch perfectly alongside these beautiful kitchen components.

Whether you opt for Shaker or Traditional, straight or curved, all pelmets and cornices are available with a choice of sanded, lacquered or painted finishes (in any colour by Farrow & Ball, perfect for matching with painted frontals).

So, take a top tip from the team here at Solid Wood Kitchen Cabinets and incorporate cornices and pelmets into your design – you can always take a look at our kitchen gallery for more inspiration! Our wire basketry is perfect for optimising the storage potential of corner cupboards, creating pull-out larders and making those hard-to-reach areas at the back of wooden cabinets much more accessible.
