If you are ready to replace your tired old kitchen with one of our gorgeous solid oak kitchens, we recommend spending plenty of time planning it to ensure that you make the most of the available space, whilst not committing to a design that might frustrate you further down the line.
If you want to avoid the most common design mistakes when creating your ideal kitchen, make sure you have familiarised yourself with these five common planning slip-ups.
#1. Not considering the space and size
When planning a kitchen it is often all too easy to get pre-occupied with a kitchen’s aesthetic and not consider how you and your family will use the space.
Consider whether you want the kitchen to purely play its practical role, or whether it will be a space for socialising. Also consider the size – do you have plenty of room for an open-plan design, or should you consider a more compact solution such as a galley-style kitchen?
#2. Too many neutral tones
Although neutral tones are always key to aspects of any living space, it is important to avoid not using too many pale colours in a kitchen, especially if there is lots of natural light available. Over use of light colours in a kitchen can make the space feel washed out and cold.
Bold colours always work well in a kitchen that gets plenty of natural light, but if you are afraid to use too many bright shades, use injections of colour on kitchen frontals and other accessories. Also consider using a variety of materials to add depth and texture to the kitchen.
#3. Not planning how you will use the space
Open plan kitchens are increasingly popular, but this layout may not suit every home – be sure to consider how you will use your kitchen before you start planning. Think about whether it is a kitchen space and nothing more, or whether you are wanting to create a multifunctional room that incorporates social, dining or work space.
Kitchen islands can help tie together kitchen and living space, whilst colouring oak kitchen door and drawer fronts to match kitchen furniture will help to achieve a synchronised appearance.
#4. Not defining a clear budget
Do not get carried away trying to create a design that your budget simply cannot afford. If you do not have a clear vision about your budget yet, then do plenty of research to get a feel for the typical cost of a kitchen that looks similar to that which you are trying to achieve.
If you are employing the services of a kitchen designer, make sure that you have made your available budget very clear to them from the outset, and be sure to include the cost of appliances and other necessary accessories.
#5. Scrimping on quality
Finally, never skimp on quality. You will want your kitchen to last many years without requiring major refurbishment, so it is not worth making compromises now.
A kitchen from Solid Wood Kitchen Cabinets is considerably more durable than a mass-produced alternative, and should last you for many years to come. Also make sure you budget for any ongoing maintenance the kitchen may require – such as oiling wooden worktops.
