“What height should base cabinets be set at in oak kitchens?” Question of the Week 04.09.16
“What height should base cabinets be set at in oak kitchens?”
Anya in Wrexham got in touch with us this week. She is planning her kitchen installation and had a question regarding the height of kitchen base units.
QUESTION:
“I recently invested in one of your beautiful oak kitchensand had it delivered last week. I now plan to install it myself. I need to adjust the cabinet legs and I wonder if you could tell me what height the base cabinets should be set at? Is there a standard height?”
ANSWER:
Hello Anya,
Thank you for purchasing your solid oak kitchen from Solid Wood Kitchen Cabinets. It’s great to hear you have decided to install your new kitchen yourself. Though some customers prefer to hire a fitter, our kitchens really are easy to install as no specialist tools are required (this can be a great cost-saver, too!).
The height of cabinets is determined, in part, by the height of your plinth. If you haven’t considered your plinths yet, they can be found on our website with their coordinating worktops. For instance, if you would like beech kitchen worktops, the matching plinths can be purchased on the same webpage for added convenience.
Our plinths are 150mm high and our kitchen cabinets are 720mm as standard. With the cabinet legs adjusted to accommodate the plinth, this gives a total height of 870mm. Meanwhile, all our standard worktops are 40mm thick giving an overall height of 910mm (though measurements may vary if you have purchased from another supplier). This is a standard height for cabinets, and will allow for standard white goods to fit underneath if required.
Once the adjustable cabinet legs are set at 150mm high, a little ‘fine-tuning’ may be required if the floor is slightly uneven (this usually only occurs in older properties). Before installing your worktops, place a spirit level onto the cabinets and adjust until the tops of the cabinets are perfectly flat.
You may find our ‘How to Fit a Kitchen: Solid Wood Base Cabinets’ article to be useful for further guidance on installing your kitchen.
Kind regards,
The Team @ Solid Wood Kitchen Cabinets
