“What is the largest of your kitchen base cabinets?”
This week, our customer question has been sent in from Sevenoaks, where Molly would like to know more about the cabinet sizes we have available.
QUESTION:
“I am looking for a big double unit for a utility room – what is the largest of your kitchen base cabinets?”
ANSWER:
Hi Molly,
Thank you for getting in touch – our solid oak cabinets are perfect for utility rooms as they are incredibly hardwearing and sturdy. The largest of our kitchen base cabinets is our 720mm x 1200mm x 570mm option which provides plenty of room for storage, and ample surface area for a worktop.
You have not specified the size of the room, so if this is too large for your home, there are a selection of different options listed on our solid oak base cabinets page. All of our cabinets are supplied with a single solid oak shelf, but extra cabinet shelving can be purchased to suit your requirements if necessary.
Our information guides provide a wealth of knowledge and our guide on measuring solid oak cabinets and cabinet doors may be useful if you are looking to replace an existing cabinet. Alternatively, you can, of course get in touch with any questions or queries you may have.
Kind regards,
The Team @ Solid Wood Kitchen Cabinets

“I want to create a modern wood kitchen – which worktops would you recommend?”
Our ‘Question of the Week’ has been sent in by Terrence in Luton, who is looking to create a contemporary design for his new kitchen and wants some advice regarding his worktops.
QUESTION:
“I will be using your solid oak cabinets for my new kitchen. I want to create a modern wood kitchen – which worktops would you recommend?”
ANSWER:
Hi Terrence,
Thank you for getting in touch – we are pleased to hear you have chosen to purchase your modern wood kitchen with us. There are a range of contemporary worktop options available to you and choosing the right one for your home will depend on the design of rest of your kitchen as well as personal taste. That said, there are a range of worktops that we feel are well suited to a modern setting, and have highlighted our top choices below.
You have not specified whether you are looking for a solid wood worktops or a laminate worktops, so we will cover both options here. If you want a wooden worktop to complement your oak cabinets, we think that creating contrast is the way to go in a modern wood kitchen. If you are considering our bespoke cabinet frontals, a lighter shade would work particularly well with our darker timbers, such as Wenge, Black Oak or Black American Walnut. For darker cabinet doors, a deep, warm timber, such as Iroko or Walnut works particularly well.
If you are looking for a practical and cost effective laminate worktop, marble effect kitchen surfaces are particular popular in contemporary kitchens; these look fantastic paired with dark cabinet frontals. Contrasting textures is a superb way of creating a modern wood kitchen and if this is something you would like to do in your home, we suggest either stone effect Ipanema grey worktops or concrete effect worktops.
This should give you some ideas for which worktops will work in a contemporary kitchen. Please get in touch if you have any further questions.
Kind regards,
The Team @ Solid Wood Kitchen Cabinets

“I am considering ordering an oak shaker kitchen from you and want to know if the back panels on your cabinets are oak too?”
The latest ‘Question of the Week’ has been sent in from Devon, where Gary would like to know more about the construction of our oak kitchen cabinets.
QUESTION:
“I am considering ordering an oak shaker kitchen from you and want to know if the back panels on your cabinets are oak too?”
ANSWER:
Hello Gary,
Thank you for getting in touch – we pride ourselves on the quality of our cabinets and this is an excellent question as occasionally, the term ‘solid wood’ is applied to kitchens where only the door is made from wood.
The solid oak cabinet carcasses we use are universal and it is the doors that change, so an oak shaker kitchen from us will feature the same high quality cabinets as one with Traditional frontals when purchased from Solid Wood Kitchen Cabinets.
Our cabinets are manufactured entirely from solid oak, with the exception of the back panels. These are made from medium density fibreboard, which allows safe expansion and contraction of the timber used for the rest of the cabinet. As oak is a natural product, it will expand and contract with changes in temperature and the amount of moisture in the air. Ensuring that our oak cabinetry has enough space to move freely and adjust to small changes in the environment results in much stronger kitchen units.
You can find out more about our cabinets by reading our Solid Wood Kitchen Cabinet Specification page. If you would like to find out anything else about our cabinets or other products in our range, we have an entire selection of information guides devoted to cabinetry.
Of course, you can get in touch with us over the telephone on 0345 22 22 990 or email us at [email protected] if you do have any questions.
We would love to see your oak shaker kitchen when it is complete – please feel free to send us photos or tag us in snaps uploaded to Facebook or Instagram!
Kind regards,
The Team @ Solid Wood Kitchen Cabinets

“What are shaker kitchen cabinets?”
This week, our ‘Question of the Week’ has been sent in by Amrita in Nottingham who would like some advice for the traditional, country-style kitchen she is planning..
QUESTION:
“Which of your cabinets would you recommend for farmhouse kitchens? I have chosen the colour White Tie and would like to know if Traditional or Shaker doors will look best.”
ANSWER:
Hello Amrita,
Thank you for getting in touch – farmhouse kitchens are a popular option which can be designed to suit a number of different settings. White Tie is an off-white shade that is a suitable choice for complementing any other hues that you want to incorporate in your theme.
Our soild oak kitchen cabinets are commonly used in kitchens with a traditional design, and as such, we would recommend our Traditional cabinet doors for use in farmhouse kitchens. Whilst our Shaker doors are a stylish and elegant option, the additional detailing on our traditional frontals makes them more suited for the look you want to create.
We have written guides with advice on creating a farmhouse kitchen and kitchen styles for solid wood if you would like further inspiration. Alternatively, you can get in touch with us if you do have further questions or need any assistance in ordering your new kitchen.
Kind regards,

“I need a simple kitchen design to fit into studio flat – is this something you can help with?”
This latest ‘Question of the Week’ has been sent in by Gwilym in Manchester’s Northern Quarter, who would like some assistance in planning his kitchen.
QUESTION:
“I need a simple kitchen design to fit into studio flat – is this something you can help with?”
ANSWER:
Hello Gwilym,
Thank you for getting in touch with us – planning a new kitchen can be a tricky task, and we are happy to be able to help. Whilst we do not have examples of a simple kitchen design for you to see, and don’t currently offer a planning service, there are a number of pointers that we can give you, to assist you in getting the job done.
You have not specified what you mean by ‘simple’ but as you have said that you are wanting the design to fit a studio flat, we will assume that space is limited. Often, studio flats will only have sufficient room to accommodate a single run of units, so it is important that that storage is as functional as possible. Our Wirework is a fantastic way to ensure every inch of cupboard space is utilised and our solid wood cabinets are available in a variety of sizes, allowing us to cater for every kitchen.
Our blogs and information guides are a fantastic place to look for advice on planning your simple kitchen design – we recently wrote about to small kitchen design ideas and featured a guide on creating kitchen plans using graph paper which may be helpful to you. If you do have any more specific questions regarding planning your kitchen, our friendly sales advisors are available to offer assistance if you would like to contact us, or you can visit any of our showrooms.
We would love to see your kitchen when it is complete, so feel free to share your pictures with us on Facebook or Instagram!
Kind regards,

“Do you have any examples of red kitchen cabinets I could see?”
This week, our latest ‘Question of the Week’ has been sent in by Anita in Harpenden, who would like to know more about viewing our bespoke cabinet options before making a purchase.
QUESTION:
Do you have examples of red kitchen cabinets I could see? I have a Farrow & Ball paint chart but I would like to see the colours on a cabinet door to help me choose better.”
ANSWER:
Hello Anita,
Thank you for getting in touch. Our bespoke painting is an option that many customers select to ensure the style truly suits the owner, and we are sure that red kitchen cabinets will look fantastic in your home.
Our sample service is a fantastic option if you want to get a better indication of what our cabinet frontals will look like in a particular Farrow & Ball shade. Our cabinet samples are miniature recreations of the full sized kitchen cabinet doors that we sell, and can be painted by our finishing specialists in any colour you like – with both Traditional and Shaker options available to choose from to suit your requirements; our samples cost just £20 including speedy delivery. If you do then purchase your red kitchen cabinets from us, we are happy to refund this cost against your order (when purchasing 10 or more doors).
Each of our showrooms has a selection of cabinet frontals in bespoke colours, and our Camden and Harlow locations both have Red Earth and Blazer doors on display (if you would like to visit us before placing your order).
We hope that one of these options is a suitable for helping you to discover the quality of our solid wood cabinet doors before placing an order with us. If you have any further questions or queries, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

“If I order painted cabinets, do I have to have them all painted the same colour?”
This week, our customer question has been sent in by Caoimhe in Harrow, who has a question about our bespoke cabinet doors.
QUESTION:
“If I order your bespoke painted cabinets, do they all need to be the same colour? I have seen a lot of two-tone kitchens and I am considering choosing two different shades – one for wall units and one for base units.”
ANSWER:
Hello Caoimhe,
Thank you for getting in touch with your question – the look you are talking about is generally referred to as ‘tuxedo cabinets’ and it is a style that has been increasing in popularity over the last year.
When ordering painted cabinet doors from us, you can select any colour you like, and you are not limited in how many different options you can select. All you need to do is make sure you choose the correct colours when you go through the ordering process. We have a guide with instructions for how to buy kitchen doors if you need any help, and don’t hesitate to contact us if you do need any further assistance.
As you have said ‘painted cabinets’ in your question, to clarify, our bespoke paint options are for the kitchen doors only – we do not paint the unit itself, as it is hidden behind the door and is more likely to chip quickly due to the kind of use it will likely be subjected to.
We would love to see a picture of your two-tone kitchen complete with tuxedo cabinets when you have fitted it – please feel free to send us pictures, or tag us in images on Facebook or Instagram.
Kind regards,
The Team @ Solid Wood Kitchen Cabinets

“Is solid wood or laminate is the better material of choice for a bathroom worktop?”
Our ‘Question of the Week’ recently came from a customer in Keswick. Colin would like to know more about using our products in a bathroom.
QUESTION:
I am using one of your base cabinets to create a bathroom vanity unit and would like to know if solid wood or laminate is the better material of choice for a bathroom worktop? Any advice you can offer will be appreciated.
ANSWER:
Hello Colin,
Thank you for getting in touch – we love it when people use our products for different rooms in the home, and vanities are a fantastic choice in any bathroom so we are sure this will look great. For a bathroom worktop, both our solid wood surfaces and laminate worktops have their benefits, which we will discuss below.
Using a wooden bathroom worktop is a stylish, sophisticated option, and one that will complement your solid oak cabinets perfectly. As you have not mentioned sinks, we will assume that your intention is to have one mounted on the unit. If this is the case, it is important to consider that water can mark or stain wood – so it is advisable to keep the surface dry if you do opt for a solid wood worktop. To make timber more suited to bathroom environments, some people lacquer or varnish wooden surfaces, though do bear in mind that this does alter the look when compared to the finish of Rustins oil that we recommend in most circumstances.
Laminate bathroom worktops are a practical, cost effective option available in a variety of different styles to suit any interior. Laminate worktops are constructed from a core of wooden particle board which is wrapped in a waterproof and scratch resistant laminate top layer, making them ideal for use in an area that is likely to be high in moisture. Comparing laminate worktops to solid wood options, the main downside is that laminate worktops are not as easy to repair – this may not be a concern, but if your bathroom is a high traffic area where damage could potentially be sustained, it could be a point to consider.
The look of your bathroom worktop is potentially the most important factor to consider – both options are suitable for use in this area of the home, but it is essential that you select a surface that you will be happy with for years to come.
We hope this response gives you a better idea of what worktop will suit your bathroom best, but if you do have any further questions or queries, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Kind regards,
The Team @ Solid Wood Kitchen Cabinets

“Which surface would you recommend for a laminate worktop breakfast bar?”
Our question of the week has been rent in by Kali in Harrow, North London, who would like to know more about using laminate work surfaces to create a breakfast bar.
QUESTION:
Which surface would you recommend for a laminate worktop breakfast bar? I am designing a new kitchen and would like to know more about the options available.
ANSWER:
Hello Kali,
Thank you for getting in touch – breakfast bars and islands are a popular option in many kitchens and are a fantastic option for providing convenient seating in a home.
We have a wide variety of laminate worktops, and any of the options available are suitable for use in creating a breakfast bar. One of the best things about laminate surfaces is that whilst the décor may change, the practical qualities that make them a low-maintenance option for any home remain the same. Our laminate kitchen surfaces are available in a selection of sizes, but our 900mm wide options are most popular for breakfast bars.
The most important thing to consider when selecting the style of your laminate worktop breakfast bar is your own personal taste – you are the one who has to live with it, so choose something you love! If you would like to see our laminate worktop collection before placing your order, our Camden showroom will have samples available in store – this is a fantastic way to see the worktops alongside our kitchens, to give a better idea of what the finished result could look like. Alternatively, we offer laminate worktop sample packs if you would prefer to see the range from the comfort of your own home.
Although we have not provided a definitive answer, we hope this has given you the confidence to select something for your kitchen that will look fantastic for years to come. Please do let us know if you have any further questions or queries.
Kind regards,
The Team @ Solid Wood Kitchen Cabinets
