Contemporary Kitchen Inspiration

Melissa came to Solid Wood Kitchen Cabinets for her new kitchen - local to our Gloucestershire showroom, it was incredibly convenient for her to visit us to get an idea of what she wanted for her home. Using our wide selection of products, Melissa was easily able to create her dream cooking space - designed to perfectly suit her love of entertaining.

My house is a period property, so, whilst I wanted a contemporary style, it was important to me that the architecture of the room was not overlooked.

Solid wood is the obvious choice for a traditional kitchen but can be used just as effectively in more modern settings. Through the versatile and customisable product range we have available, you can easily create your perfect aesthetic. Oak kitchens offer a timeless style that will age fantastically and our Shaker frontals are well-suited to more contemporary designs.

Melissa's generously proportioned kitchen features fresh, neutral colours that ensure the period aspects of the room have been incorporated into the design. Carefully curated accessories add colour and texture to the finished look, with a shiny stainless-steel sink and tap alongside sleek steel and black appliances that are perfect for the contemporary aesthetic.

I spend a lot of time in my kitchen - I host a lot of events and dinner parties - so it was important for me to achieve the look I wanted.

The cabinetry and end panelling on the island are painted in a different shade to the wall units, ensuring the large island takes centre stage in this magnificent kitchen.

I prefer a clean, minimal aesthetic but I like to have the latest kitchen gadgets, which meant ample storage was a crucial part of my design.

The fresh colours used adhere to the contemporary style and the variation in tones prevents the cabinets becoming lost in the large room. Shaker cabinets and pelmets combine classic style elements with clean, contemporary lines for a fresh, current look. Chrome knobs and handles complement the scheme, matching the sink, taps and visible appliances for a cohesive look throughout the room.

I chose two of Farrow & Ball's white shades for my cabinets and the island - the island is Hardwick White and the other cupboards are Strong White.

I love the depth that this subtle difference gives the kitchen but I also love that I have a great neutral foundation and can introduce colour if I so wish.
A contemporary stainless steel undermounted sink with one large and one smaller bowl
The sink is fantastic - the full bowl is large enough to accommodate pans that are too big for the dishwasher, and the smaller half bowl is perfect for washing vegetables and salad whilst I prepare food.

The undermounted stainless steel sink is the perfect addition to this contemporary kitchen. Sleek, with minimal detailing, it pairs perfectly with the taps Melissa has chosen. The surface mounted mixer tap is as practical as it is aesthetically pleasing as it can be used in either of the sink bowls, ensuring that if one is full the other can still be used.

The super-size kitchen island takes up a lot of floorspace, so it was important to Melissa that the space was well utilised. As well as incorporating five base cabinets, an induction hob and sink, the island is large enough to seat a handful of people - meaning Melissa is never left out, even when she is cooking. There is cupboard space wherever you look - on the island, around the double-width fridge and on one of the walls.

The seating around the island has found another purpose - whilst Melissa has a study, she has found that productivity flourishes in her kitchen with the coffee machine within close range. The lighting, provided both by the huge windows and the ultra-modern hanging lamps, creates a space that is incredibly inviting.

I was delighted at the range of cabinet sizes available and, as a result, I have managed to fit in plenty of storage space. The cupboards help to keep the space as clutter-free as possible - I have enough room to house all the appliances I could ever want or need - whilst being solidly made and looking wonderful too! I love my kitchen - it is one of my favourite rooms to be in. I would never have imagined achieving such a bespoke-feeling design without having the entire thing created from scratch just for me. Having the freedom to pick and choose exactly what I needed ensures it works on a practical level too.
