“How do I clean my solid oak kitchen cabinets?” Question Of The Week 17.04.16
“HOW DO I CLEAN MY SOLID OAK KITCHEN CABINETS?”
April’s third ‘Question of the Week’ was asked by Margo in Dorset, who emailed us to find out our top recommendations for cleaning solid oak kitchen cabinets, so as to keep them looking as good as the day she bought them.
QUESTION:
“I have recently purchased your oak kitchen cabinets and am extremely pleased with them! I was hoping you would be able to give me some advice on how best to clean them. I don’t want to risk using a cleaner that’s too abrasive and that might damage the lacquer!”
ANSWER:
Hello Margo,
We are really pleased to hear you have recently purchased from us, and would like to thank you for getting in touch to find out how best to clean oak cabinetry. Our solid wood units are a wonderful addition to any kitchen, so it really is wise to find out the best way to keep them in tip top condition.
The great thing about our cabinets is that – with their hard-wearing lacquer finish – they require very little maintenance. To clean effectively inside and out, we recommend first removing all items within your cabinets. Don’t forget to check whether these items need a wipe down too, so as not to undo all your efforts. As you say, harsh cleaning chemicals have the potential to damage the fine finish of lacquered surfaces, so we suggest using a soapy solution comprising 95% warm water and 5% washing-up liquid.
We advise using a microfibre cloth to apply the solution, but be sure to wring it out so that it is not dripping wet. Wipe over each surface of your cabinet, including all tops and undersides that are accessible. If the cabinetry is especially dusty, it may be necessary to rinse out the cloth at times, too. Afterwards, use a dry microfibre cloth to wipe each surface (following the grain pattern of the wood) before moving on to clean the next cabinet.
We recommend avoiding chemicals to tackle sticky surfaces, too, and instead would suggest mixing a solution of well-diluted vinegar and water to clean tough spots. Once any residue has been removed, clean the surface as usual to keep your cabinets in optimum condition.
Thanks for your email, Margo, and please feel free to get in touch again if you have any more questions about maintaining your oak kitchen cabinets. Don’t forget, as well as emailing us at [email protected], you can also telephone 0345 22 22 990 to speak with us right away!
Kind regards,
The Team @ Solid Wood Kitchen Cabinets
