“How Can I Create a Scandinavian Kitchen Design with Solid Oak Kitchen Cabinets?” Question of the Week 30.10.16
“How Can I Create a Scandinavian Kitchen Design with Solid Oak Kitchen Cabinets?”
Denise in Newbury got in touch this week to ask for some tips on how to create her dream kitchen design.
“I would like to create my new kitchen based on the Scandinavian style – I love the look, so simple and fresh! Do you have any advice on how I can create this look with your solid oak kitchen cabinets and other components?”
Many thanks for your email. We love the Scandinavian look too, and with a few tips from us your new kitchen design will be ready to go!
There are several things to consider when planning your Scandinavian-inspired kitchen:
The key to this look is minimalism. We recommend the sleek, simple lines of our Shaker cabinet frontals, painted in a fresh white shade such as Farrow & Ball’s Strong White. When it comes to this style of kitchen, we really think white is the best colour to use to maintain a light, airy feel.
To enhance the sense of space, we suggest keeping wall cabinets to a minimum – or have none at all, in fact. Instead, use shelving to provide easy-access storage for crockery.
To prevent a cluttered feel, we highly recommend oak floating shelves, which correspond beautifully with our solid oak cabinets. Specialist brackets remain hidden behind the shelf, instilling your kitchen with that sought-after simplicity.
Wooden work surfaces are perfect for Scandinavian-style kitchens, which should incorporate plenty of natural materials. Many prefer the traditional look of oak countertops, though you might also like to consider paler timbers such as our ash worktops or maple worktops, which look extremely elegant and complement this style of design beautifully.
It’s important to keep clutter to a minimum to embrace the sheer simplicity of this look. With this in mind, we advise installing kitchen wirework to optimise your storage, keeping dry food and cooking equipment well organised and out of sight.
SINK AND TAPS
Again, elegance and minimalism are key, so when it comes to kitchen sinks and taps, plump for simple designs. Our glossy Rangemaster Classic Belfast Sink works well, thanks to the clean elegance of natural ceramic. Alternatively, why not consider an undermounted sink, such as the WEX Atlas Sink with 1.5 Bowl?
Opt for built-in appliances: these emphasise the sleek, minimalist look you would like to achieve.
In terms of textiles, you can embrace the Scandi-chic aesthetic with rugs and seat cushions featuring geometric prints, especially those in monochromatic colours. Finally, to complete the look, black accessories and pendant lamps give a greater sense of depth, and a few potted herbs never go amiss either!
