How to Measure Solid Oak Kitchens: Cabinets & Cabinet Doors
If you’re planning on replacing your existing kitchen cabinets with some of our fine solid oak kitchen cabinets then you’ll need to know how to measure them accurately and efficiently. Luckily for you, we’ve produced this guide to give you step-by-step instructions on how to get it right before you order some of our cabinets and cabinet doors.
THINGS YOU’LL NEED
- Metal tape measure
- Notepad (or printed diagram)
- Pencil
CABINETS
Although wooden kitchen cabinets are usually manufactured to standard sizes, to rely on this assumption would be rather unwise. There are several different standards sizes, not all cabinets are made to the same tolerances, and it’s quite common to commission bespoke cabinets to fit unusual sized kitchens. Fortunately we offer a wide range of cabinet sizes, but the only way to determine the exact size you’ll require is to physically measure the cabinet and record the dimensions.
There are three key measurements to record: height, width and depth (ideally in millimetres rather than inches to correspond with our own dimensions). We’ve detailed which measurement is relevant to each part of the cabinet below, which you are welcome to print out if you’d like to keep an easy-to-understand diagram of the dimensions taken.
DOORS
Measuring kitchen unit doors is fundamentally the same process as measuring cabinets, although you have a much smaller depth to measure. Sometimes kitchens will be fitted with single or multiple cabinet doors that are fake, or that hide appliances behind them; be sure to take this in to account when taking your measurements.
All of our solid oak cabinet doors are made to match with our cabinets, so if you are happy you can fit a cabinet in place, you should be able to simply pick a matching door.
Start by taking the doors height in a similar fashion that we described for cabinets, followed by the width, and lastly the depth. We’ve conjured up a diagram for you to use to record your measurements, should you wish.
SOME TIPS
- Measure everything twice to avoid mistakes. If you get two different readings, measure again.
- With larger cabinets you may require assistance to ensure correct measurements are taken.
- Make a record of all measurements on note paper, or on the diagrams provided so that you can refer back to them when placing an order.
- Use a metal rather than a cloth or vinyl tape measure – these and cheaper measures can stretch and give erroneous figures.
