How to Refresh Your Kitchen: 5 Easy Steps
A dated or dark kitchen doesn’t make for a very homely feel in a room that is widely considered the heart of the home. So if your kitchen is feeling a little tired, don’t worry – there’s plenty you can do without spending the earth.
Follow some of our simple tips to refresh your kitchen: these easy steps will help to transform this space in to a room that you will love to spend time in. None of these suggestions require extensive expertise or complex tools to complete.
Replace cabinet handles
If you are happy enough with your existing kitchen cabinetry, we recommend refreshing your frontals by installing new handles or knobs. In many oak kitchens, they can be simply replaced by un-screwing the old knob or handle, and then screwing on a new one. At worst, you might have to drill a secondary hole if you’re switching from a knob to a handle.
Kitchen cabinet door handles made from iron, pewter and other metals with an ‘aged’ effect are very much in vogue this year. Cup handles continue to be very popular, and whilst our Lamont Cup Handle looks fantastic alongside traditional kitchen styles, the simplicity of our Smooth Cup Handle looks great in a contemporary kitchen. Both styles also have a matching knob available.

Install innovative wirework
Wirework provides the perfect solution for all your kitchen storage needs. Wirework baskets and carousels are perfect for storing vegetables you’d rather not keep in a fridge, and ideal for allowing you to easily access the rear of corner cabinets that would previously be wasted storage space.
Not only does kitchen wirework provide plenty of easy-access storage, but it also is considerably more hygienic than storing food directly on cupboard shelves.
Wirework inserts can be retro-fitted to almost any type of cabinet as long as they are a sufficient size to accommodate the mechanisms, and they’ll make everything in your kitchen much easier to access.
Here at Solid Wood Kitchen Cabinets we offer a wide range of kitchen wirework.

A fresh coat of paint
It’s probably the most straight-forward thing you can do to renovate your kitchen, and will undoubtedly have a huge impact, but don’t always feel that you have to pick a tried-and-tested shade of magnolia!
Bright colour accents and high contrast schemes are just right for refreshing your kitchen, but choose your preferred shades wisely as paint can look different under artificial lighting, or the varying hue of natural light depending on the time of year.
We can provide kitchen cabinet doors expertly finished in a range of gorgeous shades from Farrow & Ball; and, if you’re thinking of revamping the whole room, Farrow & Ball paint is also perfect for kitchen walls. For further information, read our ’Why Farrow & Ball Paints are Perfect for Oak Kitchens’ information guide.
Under-cabinet LED Lighting
There are easier ways of lightening a dark kitchen than smashing through walls, so if you feel your room is a little oppressive and lacking in natural brightness, do not despair.
LED Lighting has become much cheaper in recent years, does not run hot, is very energy efficient and can create either a very clean white light or a hue closer to natural daylight (and many other colours besides). Both battery and mains-powered LED lighting options are available; and in general – though more difficult to install – the latter is of a much higher quality.
Extra lighting adds atmosphere, functionality and enhances style, as well as better illuminating attractive solid wood worktops, which makes it easier to see what you’re doing when preparing food.
Fit fresh cabinet doors
If you can’t replace your kitchen cabinets, there’s still an easy way to make it look like you’ve had a whole brand-new kitchen fitted. For a high-impact refresh, rip off those old doors and make-way for some new solid wood kitchen doors.
If your cabinets are of a standard width, then it’s as easy as unscrewing your existing doors and replacing them with some fresh frontals.
Our kitchen cabinet doors are constructed entirely from European oak – even the thinner centre panel, and are available in either a traditional or shaker style.
