Create Sustainable Oak Kitchens in Five Steps
If you are looking for a kitchen that is as eco-friendly as it is stylish, kitchen components from Solid Wood Kitchen Cabinets are the ideal place to start.
We are very proud of our company ethos of being very open about our environmental practices and use of sustainable materials – have a read of our Environmental Policy page to find out more.
Creating a sustainable kitchen is a lot easier than it used to be, primarily because more companies (like ourselves) are taking the trouble to adhere to environmental certifications, and – thanks largely due to technology’s impact on global communication – because it is easier to monitor the timber used in all of our kitchen products more stringently.
A sustainable kitchen doesn’t have to be boring – far from it. Many of our products are from fully sustainable resources and look fantastic, too. Here’s our 5 step guide to creating sustainable oak kitchens.
Sustainable European Oak Cabinets
Our entire range of base cabinets, wall cabinets, full height cabinets and other specialist units are constructed from 18mm thick solid European oak that is both sustainable and of the highest quality.
The oak that makes up these finger-jointed panels is sourced from a variety of forests in Eastern Europe, all of which are FSC certified. They are constructed in Europe, where offcuts and excess timber is recycled wherever possible.
Bamboo: A Sustainable Worktop Choice
Whilst oak is our timber of choice for kitchen cabinets, we also offer a range of worktops, some of which have incredible environmentally-sound credentials.
Bamboo is perhaps the most sustainable worktop material available. It regrows very quickly and does not need large resources to grow successfully. We offer bamboo worktops and caramel bamboo worktops which both look superb in a modern kitchen.
Wood Can Be Replenished
Unlike many other materials used to create modern kitchens, wood is a material that can be easily replenished through replanting schemes, and provides new habitats for insects and other animals.
Granite and other stone surfaces are finite resources that have a high impact on the environment when removed, whilst plastic composite surfaces are made from oil – another resource that cannot be replenished.

Use Eco-Friendly Farrow & Ball Paints
If you choose to order painted oak kitchen doors and drawer fronts from us, you can rest assured that we only use the finest quality water based paints from Farrow & Ball.
Water based paints are kinder to the environment and contain minimal VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds). They are also produced in England, meaning they aren’t unnecessarily shipped around the world.

Buy From A Company That Cares
As well as preferencing sustainable materials, we go through great lengths to ensure that we are recycling, whilst producing as little waste as possible.
In our Gloucester headquarters, our warehouse is heated exclusively by a wood burner that is fed by offcuts and scraps from our worktops and other products.
All sawdust created is efficiently recycled, and the finishing oils used are made from cold pressed linseed oil with natural tree resins.
