Kitchens are often the most important room in modern family homes. With this in mind, our oak kitchens prioritise versatility above all, making it easy to transform this central room of the home into a practical and inviting space where family members can come together, cook, eat and socialise.
In many houses, the kitchen also serves as a flexible, multi-functional space to entertain guests, work and relax, especially in homes with an open-plan layout. Whilst it is worth tailoring your modern wooden kitchen to cater for such a wide variety of activities, it is also valuable to put careful consideration into other design aspects such as your choice of cabinets, worktops, kitchen accessories and décor, creating a kitchen style that is harmonious and cohesive.
Oak kitchen cupboards
Our high-quality oak kitchen cupboards are fundamental to the natural charm of our wooden kitchens. Made with 18mm-thick panels comprising solid oak staves, all our cabinetry is hard-wearing and built to stand the test of time. To infuse kitchens with modern style, we suggest opting for Shaker-style cabinet doors, complete with a painted finish.
All paints are provided by our favourite paint specialists, Farrow & Ball; these water-based, low-odour paints are ideal for use within the home. The colours within our Signature range of painted finishes – All White, New White, Mizzle and Parma Gray – are ideal for conveying a sense of modern elegance. In particular, we highly recommend All White for creating a light and airy atmosphere: containing no other pigment than white, this hue is fresh, clean and bright. Thanks to the characterful grain texture and warmth of wooden units and work surfaces, it is virtually impossible for white to look cold in one of our fantastic real wood kitchens.
If you have your heart set on a colour scheme that is a little more dramatic, why not plump for a darker shade such as Hague Blue for your cabinet doors, and pair it with vibrant yellow accessories. Gentler shades such as Joa’s White and Clunch are also brilliant for a more low-key look on wooden cabinet fronts.
For a truly consistent finish, add matching painted end panels to a run of cabinets or a kitchen island unit.
Functional storage for modern kitchens
Our handy wirework solutions are a smart choice for ensuring that worktop clutter is minimal, producing a sleek, streamlined aesthetic.
Spacious pull-out wire baskets make the contents of kitchen base cabinets easily accessible, whilst our 150mm pull-outs help make use of every inch available. Take a look at our BLUM™ Space Tower range of full-height cabinets to discover the ultimate space-saving solution.
Kitchen worktops
A wide range of countertops are well-suited to a modern kitchen design. In addition to high-gloss surfaces made of granite or laminate, for example, there are also a variety of timber worktops that complement a kitchen of modern styling.
Versatile solid oak worktops can look fantastic in modern kitchens, particular when complemented by coordinating oak flooring. Our full stave Prime Oak option is a particularly impressive choice, which boasts consistent coloration and magnificent staves that run the full length of the work surface.
Our beech kitchen worktops are also a popular range for contemporary design schemes; with warm hues and a unique grain structure, these worktops are distinctive and immensely hard-wearing.
Exotic wood species make a striking feature in kitchens, too. For example, dark wenge worktops are rich and dramatic, whilst our unmistakable zebrano worktops are fantastically eye-catching.
Putting two different styles of worktop alongside one another is becoming increasingly popular in modern homes; this creates a beautiful contrast of textures and is certainly worth considering. Whichever style of work surface you opt for, you can trust that our wood worktops are ethically and sustainably sourced, and will look spectacular in your new kitchen.
Splashbacks
Incorporating glass and steel elements is a great way to enhance the modern look of your kitchen. Not only do shiny, reflective splashbacks bounce light around the room, they are also a practical solution for protecting walls from wayward sauces and spills. Our glass kitchen splashbacks are available in a range of colours, whilst our stainless steel splashbacks can be purchased with a polished or black-coated finish. All of our splashbacks are easy to install and are made to meet the highest manufacturing standards.
Handles
Contemporary handles and knobs complete the look of any modern kitchen. Sleek, unobtrusive designs are popular, such as our Metropolis Bow Handles and corresponding Metropolis Mushroom Knobs, which can be mixed and matched across cabinet doors and drawers. If you wish to take an especially minimalist approach, our slender nickel-plated steel bar handles come in a range of lengths, and are in fact the best-selling handles in our extensive collection.
For a highly sophisticated look, our elegant Queslett Cup Handles are made with a robust brass core coated in polished nickel, and are individually handmade in Britain. Matching Queslett Knobs are also available, and offer modern kitchens a heightened sense of luxury.
If you prefer a brushed metallic finish, we are pleased to offer our Sleek Cup Pull Handle. The contemporary ‘cup’ style, durable zinc alloy centre and attractive brushed nickel finish are well-suited to a wide range of kitchens.
