Ah, October: a cool, autumnal month with orange leaves falling from the trees (and – oftentimes – plenty of rain!) – what better time to hibernate within oak kitchens? Hallowe’en looms, but we urge you to leave the trick or treaters at the door and indulge yourself by preparing some healthy yet tasty treats, courtesy of this October’s ‘Gadget of the Month’.
Our pick for this month’s ‘Gadget’ is the Philips Viva HR1832/01 juicer: an affordable yet high-quality bit of kit. Juicing may not seem like an obvious past-time for the winter months, but in fact there’s no better time to get stuck in: fresh juices made from raw fruit and veg contain bags of nutrients – perfect for staving off those winter colds and giving your energy levels a bit of a boost in the darker days of the year.
This juicer is much more compact than the average juicer, whilst being both dishwasher-safe and easy to de-assemble and clean by hand. As a centrifugal juicer, it can be a bit noisy (when compared with masticating juicers, which extract juice more slowly but tend to be more expensive), but the volume and quality of the juice produced is excellent. In addition, it has a decent-sized chute that allows you to feed chunks of fruit or vegetable down it – minimising time wasted on chopping. Most vegetables and fruits can be juiced (we recommend a combination of carrot, apple, lemon and ginger – yum), but watch out for starchy substances like avocado and banana: these must be blended and not juiced.
Available from Currys for £59.99, this reliable, lightweight juicer makes it easy to drink huge helpings of your favourite fruits and vegetables. Bottoms up!
